Comparison of fast algorithms for estimating large-scale permeabilities of heterogeneous media

Two algorithms suggests for fast calculation of flow properties, one based on random walks and the other on real space renormalization group methods, were compared using the results of numerical tests performed on 30 different permeability realizations in 3-D. Both methods had problems for anisotropic, strongly correlated, dipping sand/shale realizations. Random walks were always computationally more efficient than renormalization and the effect increased with the increase in grid size.
