Compression behaviour of saturated wood perpendicular to grain under large deformations. Comparison between water-saturated and ethylene glycol-saturated wood

The compression behaviour of Spruce (Picea abies) wood in the radial direction was studied at temperatures up to 150 degrees C in order to obtain more information regarding the mechanical pulping process. Ethylene glycol was used as softener and its behaviour was compared with that of water below 100 degrees C. The specimens were compressed to 50% deformation at different temperatures below 150 degrees C. Stress-strain curves and the plastic strain after stress recovery were analysed.
