Studies were made on nutrient status (especially P) over two 11-field rotations (1972-94) involving maize, winter wheat, lucerne, lucerne, maize and soyabeans, on a calcic Chernozem in SE Russia. Fertilizer systems were based on creating the optimum P supply for each crop, taking into account the residual effect of P fertilizers.
