By incubating bark pieces from the trunk of 7 groups of chestnut trees in water agar, in a locality in northern Italy, 780 strains of filamentous microfungi of 78 taxa were isolated. Different variables, such as the presence (C/C) or absence of blight (S/C), types of bark and age of trees, were considered. The highest number of isolations was obtained from the bark of the trunk and the base of old (67%) and young (64.8%) C/C trees.
