Cytogenetic study of diploid and triploid F1 hybrids of Zea mays ssp. mays x Zea parviglumis

Information on meiotic configurations is derived from F1 diploid and triploid hybrids from crosses of diploid and tetraploid Z. mays (2n = 20 and 40, respectively) with Z. parviglumis (2n = 20). The triploid hybrids were obtained via embryo rescue about 14 days after pollination. Pollen fertility ranged from 80 to 94% in the diploid hybrids and from 46 to 86% in the triploid hybrids.
