Definition of genetic determinants of nisin-producing ability in Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis strains isolated in Turkey

Definition of genetic determinants of nisin-producing ability in Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis strains isolated in Turkey

Turkish Journal of Biology 20(Supplement): 9-18

The nisin-producing ability of 142 strains of L. lactis subsp. lactis was studied. Only 4 strains produced nisin. Mutagenesis studies involving the application of ethidium bromide, acriflavine and ultraviolet light indicated that the production of nisin in these strains was not controlled by plasmids, but by elements in chromosomal DNA. All nisin-producing strains were challenged by 27 lactococcal phages. L. lactis subsp. lactis LL3 was very sensitive to infection by the P90-60 phage.
