Rumen metabolism, digestibility and performance were studied in sheep given isoenergetic diets containing 10, 12, 14 or 16% CP and lasalocid 0 or 33 mg/kg. Lasalocid decreased rumen ammonia, the ratio of acetate to propionate in total volatile fatty acids and rumen protozoa. Nitrogen retention increased with lasalocid. Liveweight gain and feed intake during 90 days of finishing improved in sheep given lasalocid. Performance could be maintained with diets containing 12% CP and lasalocid or 16% CP and no lasalocid. These combinations gave no differences in productivity or carcass characteristics.
