Development of smallholdings in the Shatrovskii region of Kurganskaya Oblast'

The number of smallholdings in the Shatrovskii region of Kurganskaya Oblast' had reached 11 000 by Jan. 1, 1994, a 3.5% increase over 1988. Averaging only 0.17 ha/family, they totalled together about 2000 ha, or 1% of the available agricultural land. However, they play an important role in the region's agrofood production, accounting for 29.1% of the overall total in 1992, and (1990 data) 88% of potatoes (the main crop), 60% of other vegetables, 93% of fruits and 22% of milk.
