Developmental abnormalities of the reproductive tract associated with infertility in Highland heifers

Sixteen barren heifers which had accumulated over a 4-year-period in a herd of 50 adult Highland cattle plus followers were slaughtered and reproductive tracts examined. Developmental abnormalities of the Mullerian ducts were detected in 8 of the heifers including non-patent cervix, non-patent uterine tubes and double os cervix. Since affected animals came from different pedigree lines, it is suggested that the condition is a breed rather than a herd problem.
