Diversity, abundance and foraging activity of insect pollinators of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) at Hisar (India)

Diversity, abundance and foraging activity of insect pollinators of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) at Hisar (India)

Indian Bee Journal 56(3/4): 172-178

In a survey on sunflower plots at Hisar, India, 20 insect species were observed visiting the floral heads. Of the 12 bee species observed, the honey bees Apis mellifera (22.8/30 heads) and A. dorsata (9.9/30 heads) were the most frequent visitors, foraging for both nectar and pollen. Five species of Diptera and 3 species of Lepidoptera also visited the flowers, but were much lower in abundance. Insects were more abundant on the hybrid MSFH-8 than on the other hybrid grown, EC-6815.
