Economic aspects of Mediterranean aquaculture production

Medit 7(3): 4-13
Economic aspects of Mediterranean aquaculture production
Mediterranean aquaculture production has grown steadily, with 1994 production representing approximately 5% of global aquaculture production. Although Mediterranean aquaculture focuses mainly on molluscs (67.8%), the share of fish (31%) is in constant progression. Sea fish production is characterized by the dominance of two species, sea bass and sea bream (about 35 000 tonnes). The steady growth of aquaculture is the consequence of a great deal of private and public investment.
