Based on support prices of kharif season crops announced in early August, economic indicators of fertilizer use in India are computed. Higher support prices have made fertilizer use more profitable. Thus far, most economic analyses of P application have been faulty in that they have allocated the full cost of P to the first crop only, whereas P is known to leave behind a significant carry-over benefit for the following crops (about 40% of total benefit).
