During the last 2 months of pregnancy, 24 crossbred cows were fed on diets containing 80 (L), 100 (M) or 130% (H) of the energy requirements for pregnancy (NRC, 1989). For 126 days after calving, H and L cows were fed on H (groups HH and LH, respectively) or L diets (groups HL and LL) with group M remaining unchanged (MM). The body condition score of MM, HL, HH, LH and LL cows at calving was 3.63, 4.48, 3.897, 2.86 and 3.98, respectively.
