Effect of colchicine treatment with different doses and periods of in vitro chromosome doubling in haploid watermelon

The objective of this study was to induce chromosome doubling in parthenogenetic haploid plants produced using irradiated pollen. Colchicine (0.5 and 1%) was applied (for 1,2 4 and 6 h) to 3-4-week-old in vitro shoot tip explants of Citrullus lanatus cultivars Sugar Baby, Halep Karas and Crimson Sweet. Some 56% of plants treated with 0.5% colchicine regenerated into new plantlets. At a concentration of 1% colchicine this figure decreased to 40%.
