The influence of supplementing 4 strains (L1, L2, L3 and L4) of Lactobacillus bulgaricus (6.8 x 108 cells/kg feed) on growth, feed conversion efficiency, mortality and digestibility of nutrients was studied in commercial broilers up to 6 weeks old. Of these strains, only L4 from HPKV, Palampur, India, was promising in that it resulted in improved feed conversion efficiency and lower mortality during finishing only. Overall (1-6 weeks) results indicated that none of the strains was effective in stimulating broiler growth over the control groups (with or without culture medium) except L4.
