Effect of different bulbil sizes and spacing on cultivation of garlic (Allium sativum L.) cv. Quiteria

In field trials on dark-red dystrophic soil in Lavras, Minas Gerais, Brazil, large (15 x 25 mm), medium (10 x 20 mm) and small (8 x 17 mm) garlic (cv. Quiteria) bulbils were stored for 50 days at 4 degrees C before planting 5, 10 or 15 cm apart with 25 cm between rows. The plants were harvested when 90% of leaves had reached the dry stage. Planting medium-sized bulbils 10 cm apart gave the highest yield (1952 kg/ha) and the highest proportion of marketable bulbs.
