Effect of ethephon (2-chlorethylphosphonic acid) on monoecious muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) F1 hybrid seed production

The effects of ethephon on melon sex expression, plant size, fruit and seed yield were tested during 3 years of experiments. Plants of 3 inbred monoecious lines were treated with 300 and 400 p.p.m. ethephon under greenhouse conditions. Foliar application of ethephon induced a temporary gynoecious stage (averaging 7-10 days) during which development of male buds was inhibited. During this period, only pistillate flowers were present and bees could pollinate the flowers.
