Effect of gibberellic acid on growth, biomass production and associated physiological parameters in some selected tree species

In this study three tree species, namely Dolichandrone atrovirens (Heyne ex Roth) Sprague (Bignoniaceae), Eugenia jambolana Lam. DC (Myrtaceae) and Terminalia bellerica (Gaertn.) Roxb. (Combretaceae) were treated with three concentrations of GA-3 (50, 100 and 200 ppm) by foliar application in 6 month-old saplings. Foliar application of GA-3 resulted in an increase in shoot length, internodal elongation, leaf area, biomass production, chlorophyll content, RuBP carboxylase activity, protein content and the rate of photosynthesis in all the three tree species and at all the concentrations studied. The highest concentration of GA-3 was found to be superior than the other two lower concentrations. Foliar application of GA-3 is therefore found beneficial in hastening plant growth, biomass production and associated physiological parameters of all three species studied.
