Male Wistar rats, of body weight 50-83 and 327-365 g, were given by stomach tube, a single dose of sodium nitrate solution to provide NO3minus at 500 or 1000 mg/kg body weight, respectively. Blood was taken every hour for 10 h for estimation of methaemoglobin (metHb) and activity of metHb reductase (MHR). In the younger rats, the concentration of metHb increased equally after either dose of sodium nitrate.
