Effect of sources and time of application of N fertilizers on nutritional status of soil and maize growth

An experiment at Pantnagar, was taken to study the effects of sources, quantity and time of N application on NO3-N status of soil and maize growth. NO3-N status of soil varied considerably with quantity, source and time of N application. Irrespective of source, higher NO3-N was observed in pots receiving larger quantities of N; whereas there was consistent build up of NO3-N in all the sources it was marked in pots receiving part of N during later part of study especially in ordinary area. Neem cake treated urea application resulted in lower NO3-N content of soil in early part of study and its application afterwards did not prove useful. Better plant growth observed during early part in ordinary urea source was commensurate to the quantity of N application. Application of N at later stages was effective in producing higher shoot and root dry matter in case of urea and briqueted urea only. Higher N content of shoot resultant of later application of fertilizer nitrogen indicates the utility of split application.
