Effectiveness and utilization by maize of nitrogen from urea ammonium nitrate applied in combination with nitrification inhibitors under conditions of chemical weed control

In field trials with forage maize on grey forest soil in the Yaroslav region in 1989-90, applying 100 kg N/ha as urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) solution gave slightly higher fresh forage and dry matter yields than granular urea or ammonium nitrate. Addition of 1-carbamoyl-3(5)-methylpyrazole (CMP) or methylpyrazole (MP) to UAN at 2% of the N rate gave further increases in yield and N uptake. The nitrification inhibitors increased the coefficient of utilization of UAN from 49-53 to 61-74%.
