Pregnant cows were assigned to 3 treatments of 31 each: normally managed and fed to attain a body condition score (BCS) of 5.0 at calving (NOR); normally managed but the offspring were early-weaned at about 70 days after calving (NOREW); and nutritionally restricted to attain a BCS of 3.5 at calving and the calves were early weaned (LOWEW). NOR cows were given daily and singly 3 lb of a pelleted supplement containing 41% protein from November 9, 1993, to April 19, 1994.
