A total of 12 multiparous Holstein Friesian cows, 4-5 years old, in month 4 of lactation were kept in uniform thermoneutral conditions (18 degrees C, 75% relative humidity) for 5 weeks followed by 20 days of continued thermoneutrality or heat stress (10.00 to 20.00 h at 33 degrees C, 75% RH, and 22.00 to 08.00 h at 28 degrees , 75% RH). A complete diet was given ad libitum in individual feeders.
