Shoot tips of 12 sweet potato genotypes formed embryogenic callus on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 0.2 or 2 mg 2,4-D/litre. Frequency of embryogenic callus formation varied from 0 to 75.7% with genotype, 2,4-D concentration and the interaction between them. After 8-9 weeks continuous culture, somatic embryos appeared on the surface of embryogenic callus, although in Lizixiang only about 3 weeks culture was required.
