Estimation of environmental effects on carcass traits in pigs

RDA Journal of Agricultural Science Livestock 38(1): 763-769
Estimation of environmental effects on carcass traits in pigs
The effects of environments on the carcass traits of pigs were estimated by the least squares means (LSM) using the linear model. The effects estimated were breed, calving year, sex, and slaughter days. The estimated LSMs for year showed a trend of slight increase. Seasonal effects on backfat thickness were 2.66 +- 0.16cm and 2.70 +- 0.13cm for spring and fall. respectively, which were slightly higher than those of summer (2.20 +- 0.18cm) and winter(2.35. +- 0.31cm), respectively. The dressing percentage(%) by slaughter days were increased as the slaughter increased as expected. For the effects of breed, there were no significant differences for the traits of dressing percentage(%) and marketing lean meat yields.
