Evaluation of the epidemic potential of a new oat virus: its detection, vectoring and ecology

Evaluation of the epidemic potential of a new oat virus: its detection, vectoring and ecology

HGCA Project Report ( 128): 35 pp.

The results of a 2 year study on the detection, ecology and epidemic potential of oat chlorotic stunt tombusvirus (OCSV) in the UK are presented. OCSV was detected in roots, root exudates, chlorotic and necrotic parts of symptom bearing leaves, floral parts and in dried soil c. 12 months after infected plants had died. In field trials on contaminated sites during 1992-93 and 1993-94, 0.1% and 0% of plants showed systemic symptoms, but root infections were recorded in 26% and 13%, respectively.
