Evaluation of yield stability of durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.)-peas (Pisum sativum L.) intercrops under semi-arid conditions

In field trials in 1992-94 at Villalba, Sicily, and Reggio Calabria, Italy, durum wheat and peas were grown in pure stands or were intercropped at ratios of 25:75, 50:50, 75:25 or 100:100 (i.e. using the same sowing rates as for pure stands), with or without N fertilizer. The highest LER values were obtained in the intercrops with a high density of durum wheat (1.22, 1.13 and 1.11 with 100:100, 50:50 and 75:25 intercrops).
