Genetic engineering for herbicide resistance in plants

Many herbicides lack selectivity, thus, limiting their use in pre-emergence application. Genetic engineering for herbicide tolerance in crops is a way of conferring selectivity, and enhancing crop safety and production. At least two different strategies have been employed in genetic engineering for herbicide resistance. The most straightforward strategy is to identify an enzyme or other gene product that detoxifies or inactivates the herbicide.
