In field trials in 1991/92 in Passo Fundo, Brazil 9 maize cultivars were sown following application of 15 kg N, 80 kg P2O5 and 60 kg K2O/ha at densities of 55 000-65 000 plants/ha, and when sown in mid-Sep. or early Jan. were harvested in early March and late May, respectively. Cultivar 901 gave the highest grain yields at both harvest dates, decreasing from 10.9 t/ha following sowing in Sep. to 5.3 t after sowing in Jan. Average grain yields decreased by 58.2% from 9.7 t to 4.0 t/ha following earlier and late sowing, respectively.
