Honey-fungus attack on windthrown wood stored under water sprinklers

Honey-fungus attack on windthrown wood stored under water sprinklers

AFZ/Der Wald, Allgemeine Forst Zeitschrift fur Waldwirtschaft und Umweltvorsorge 51(6): 329-332

Details are given of the condition of Picea abies and Abies alba logs during long-term storage under water-sprinklers in Germany. Contrary to expectation, infestation by honey fungus was observed in many of the stacks from the 3rd year of sprinkling, and reached commercially significant levels from the 4th year onwards. The honey fungus is restricted to the peripheral sapwood region, and is found mainly in the interior rather than the outer parts of the stacks.
