Host-parasitoid food webs: dynamics, persistence, and invasion

The population dynamics of a model host-parasitoid community with 2 hosts that interacted only through a shared generalist parasitoid were studied. The community was completed by 2 specialist parasitoids, each of which attacked one host. Communities in different regions of parameter space were predicted on the basis of community stability and the invasion ability of the absent species. Specialists and generalists' relative searching efficiencies and density-dependent reduction in parasitoid searching efficiency crucially determined community structure. There was no dynamically stable end point in some areas of parameter space, resulting in complex cycles in which the food web's structure constantly changed as species were lost and added. A species' ability to invade could depend on the interaction of invading and resident species' dynamics. Complex dynamic behavior determined by local population interactions and frequency of species invasions can thus be displayed by some communities of hosts and parasitoids.
