Identification of homologues of the mammalian intestinal lactase gene in non-mammals (birds and molluscs)

, : Identification of homologues of the mammalian intestinal lactase gene in non-mammals (birds and molluscs). Biochemical Journal 322: 491-498

A reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction strategy using a degenerate mixture of oligonucleotides was developed to search for the presence of transcripts similar in sequence to the mammalian beta -galactosidase messenger RNA (mRNA) in the digestive tracts of a bird (the chicken) and an invertebrate (the mussel, Mytilus edulis). Partial complementary DNA (cDNA) corresponding to the 3' end of intestinal mRNA were identified in the chicken and mussel.
