Identification of the sex pheromone of the western poplar clearwing moth (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae)

, : Identification of the sex pheromone of the western poplar clearwing moth (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae). Environmental Entomology 25(1): 109-113

The sex attractant pheromone for western poplar clearwing, Paranthrene robiniae (Hy. Edwards), was identified by field trapping, gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy, and electroantennography to be approximately a 4:1 ratio of (E,Z):(Z,Z)-3,13-octadecadienyl alcohols. Efficient attraction of male P. robiniae requires that both alcohol components be present. The blend of the 2 synthetic components should provide a sensitive and effective lure for monitoring western poplar clearwing moth populations.
