In an experimental plot of sweet corn in Maracay, Aragua state, an apparently viral disease was observed. Affected plants showed severe symptoms of mosaic and stunting. The disease was mechanically transmitted to healthy plants of maize and sorghum, in order to study it in the laboratory. The identification of this, and of another similar isolate obtained from johnsongrass from Acarigua, Portuguese State, was based on the following criteria: reactions of differential hosts mechanically inoculated, stability in sap, electron microscopy, serology, transmission by aphids and seed transmission. Both isolates reacted similarly, and based on the results obtained, it was concluded that the virus studied is maize dwarf mosaic virus-strain A (MDMV-A). Additionally, the reaction to the virus of 37 gramineous species, and of 14 dicots, was evaluated. Amongst the gramineae, 20 species were susceptible, but none of the dicots were. Brachiaria plantaginea, Chloris inflata and Paspalum fimbriatum are reported, apparently for the first time, as hosts of MDMV-A.
