Field experiments in Tamil Nadu, India showed that the nitrogen balance of the soil was positive (20.8 kg/ha) under a rice-cotton cropping system. Net losses of nitrogen were recorded in rice-soyabean cropping systems (-24.4 kg/ha) and in finger millet (Eleusine coracana)-rice-cotton systems (-214.6 kg/ha). The phosphorus balance was positive in all systems and highest in the rice-soyabean system. The potassium balance was negative (-441.8 kg/ha) under maize-rice-cotton.
