Integrated red rice management in Latin American rice fields

A review is given of the different control measures against field infestations of red rice in irrigated and direct-seeded rice in Latin America. Important are the availability of red-rice-free seed and the economic incentives for its use. Herbicide use can be reduced by preventive measures (shallow tillage, flooding, burning of crop residues and crop rotations), good water control, competitive and submergence-tolerant cultivars, and the use of economic thresholds.
