Should and can the knowledge of the properties of plants be owned by local, traditional groups rather than by national governments? What are the possible instruments, under the Convention on Biological Diversity, for bringing income generated through genes derived from populations in an area, back to those same communities and to locally oriented programmes of conservation and social development.
