Light interception and use efficiency in sunflowers (Helianthus annuus L.) subjected to various irrigation regimes

In a field trial in 1993 at Gaudiano di Lavello, Italy, sunflowers Romsun HS 90 were irrigated only at sowing (control), when the soil water potential dropped below the wilting point or to replace 50 or 100% of maximum evapotranspiration. Maximum LAI values increased from 0.8 to 4.2 and total shoot DM from 320 to 1430 g m-2 with increasing irrigation rate. The calculated value of the light extinction coefficient (1.2) indicated a regular distribution of leaves with little shading.
