Longitudinal root anatomy, cell dynamics, and physiological cell responses in root growth zones of two tall fescue genotypes at two nitrogen levels

Kinematics of root growth zones of two Festuca arundinacea genotypes (high and low yield per tiller) receiving 50 or 200 p.p.m. N were determined. Root caps extended about 0.4-0.5 mm from the apical initial, while the cell elongation zone for both cortical and metaxylem cells extended about 3.3 mm from the apical initial for both genotypes and N levels. Root cap cells elongated from an initial length of about 5 micro m to a final length of about 40 micro m before being sloughed.
