Maintenance of the exocytotic and endocytic apparatus involved in protein targeting in plant cells
By a combination of molecular genetic and biochemical approaches, the characterization of the cellular events occurring during vesicle trafficking and secretion is starting to reveal a unified concept of vesicle production, targeting and fusion. However, the intracellular configuration of the various sub-compartments of the endomembrane system in relation to the different modes of secretion is often overlooked. In this commentary we discuss the structural framework of the exocytotic and endocytic machinery in plant cells and review the possible pathways for protein secretion and vesicle trafficking in different cell types.
