Male production by laying workers in queenright colonies of Melipona favosa (Apidae, Meliponinae)

Biology and evolution of social insects: 89-97
Male production by laying workers in queenright colonies of Melipona favosa (Apidae, Meliponinae)
Laying workers of M. rufiventris can produce different eggs: male-producing eggs (or reproductive worker eggs, RWEs) and trophic worker eggs (TWEs). This has now been confirmed for M. favosa. In experimental M. favosa colonies without a queen, workers always produced RWEs. In queenright colonies workers generally produced TWEs.
