Management of calves in groups in open huts

, : Management of calves in groups in open huts. KTBL Schrift ( 370): 140-150

An illustrated description is given of open-air huts, adjacent to a cattle yard and used to house 30 Simmental calves from 5-12 days to 12 weeks of age. The huts were divided into individual cubicles, and were open at one end or provided with a curtain providing some shelter from the wind. All calves were fed in the yard, but 99.1% of calves used the huts for resting. Daily gain ranged from 900 to 1600 g.
