Management of herbicide resistant weeds in Latin America: the case of propanil-resistant Echinochloa colona in rice

An account is given of propanil-resistant Echinochloa colona in rice in Colombia and other Central American countries. Resistance is associated with an increased activity of the aryl acyl amidase enzyme in the resistant biotypes which enable them to metabolize propanil at a much higher rate than susceptible biotypes. Integrated management tactics could help in controlling resistant populations and preventing resistance evolution.
