Market-based rural land reform in southern Africa - real possibility or pipe dream? The case of South Africa's commercial agricultural sector

Market-based rural land reform in southern Africa - real possibility or pipe dream? The case of South Africa's commercial agricultural sector

Agricultural competitiveness, market forces, and policy choice: eastern and southern Africa perspectives and case studies: 181-199

An analysis is presented of the South African land market to investigate the forces driving the market, and to understand the possible effects of interventions in the land market. An overview of rural land transactions and land transfers in South Africa is presented. A model is used to demonstrate the results of simulating land price changes in South Africa, with data for the period 1955-91. From this information, some possibilities of a market based land reform are presented.
