The main causative agents of mastitis are Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus, which are found mainly on the mammary gland and transmitted from one cow to another during milking. A study of 320 randomly selected farms carried out in the Richelieu-Yamaska region of Quebec (Canada) indicated the presence of S. agalactiae in 47% of dairy herds and S. aureus in 93% of herds; only 5% of herds were free of these 2 bacteria.
