Maturity and storage temperature regimes for KwaZulu/Natal avocados

, : Maturity and storage temperature regimes for KwaZulu/Natal avocados. Yearbook South African Avocado Growers' Association 18: 102-105

Moisture content is widely used as an indicator of avocado fruit maturity in the selection of export temperature regimes. Trials during 1990/91 at the Everdon Estate in KwaZulu/Natal, in which fruits were harvested at intervals, established moisture contents at harvest for acceptable ripening and fruit quality of 75, 70, 75 and 69% for the cultivars Fuerte, Edranol, Hass and Ryan, respectively. These values are lower than the allowed limits in the Transvaal (80% for Fuerte).
