Meadow fescue is dependent on its propagation by seeds

Experiments were carried out in 1991-93 to study the propagation of meadow fescue in permanent grassland through tillering and seed shedding. In the short term, meadow fescue maintained its tiller number through tillering only. However, dead tufts were not replaced. Since areas of surviving tufts did not expand, meadow fescue was dependent on new plants for its long-term survival in the sward. Propagation by seeds allowed meadow fescue to replace dead tufts and colonize niches.
