Soil micromorphology was used to investigate the fertility of north eastern China's cultivated soils under different tillage systems. Soils investigated included humidified black soils, low fertility black soils, ameliorated albic soils, and meadow type paddy soils. Differentiating features of these soils include the iron-manganese content, the constitution of plasma materials, skeleton grains, aggregates, the void distribution pattern and plant residues.
