Morphological variability in three strains of Sarcoptes scabiei (Acaridida: Sarcoptidae) from Costa Rica

The occurrence of the dorsal bare area and ventro-lateral scales was studied in S. scabiei females from 3 types of infestation: 'Norwegian' or crusted scabies (W.S. S.1 strain), an epidemic outbreak of 'classic' scabies (HSC strain) and swine sarcoptic mange (P strain). The presence of the dorsal bare area did not differ between the W.S. S.1 and HSC strains, but there was a difference between the human strains and the porcine P strain.
