Multicenter randomized trial of fluconazole versus amphotericin B for treatment of candidemia in non-neutropenic patients

A randomized trial was conducted to compare the efficacy and safety of fluconazole versus that of amphotericin B in the treatment of candidaemia in 106 non-neutropenic adults at St Paul's Hospital, Vancouver, Canada. Enrolment was stratified by disease severity (APACHE II score). Causative organisms were Candida albicans (73 patients), C. glabrata (13), C. parapsilosis (8), C. tropicalis (2), C. guilliermondii (1), C. albicans and T. glabrata (3), and Saccharomyces or Rhodotorula (3).
